One thing that often confuses people about the Avalon cycle of stories by Marion Zimmer Bradley and Diana Paxson is the order in which the books were written, the order that is best to read them and how it all falls on a time line. While one might be inclined to read them in chronological order by storyline, the best method is undoubtedly to go in the order in which they were written, beginning with The Mists of Avalon.

It’s been a decade since Loreena released a new recording and this highly anticipated set was well worth the wait. The Celtic/World artist has out done herself in transporting the listener by sound to ancient times and places.

by Celtic Woman
What a stunning and moving performance! This concert features five superb Celtic musicians (four soloists and one violinist). The mix of traditional Irish tunes, a few Enya pieces and some new celtic numbers made for an unforgettable music experience. Even if you are not into Celtic music but like a soothing sound with a light pop mix, this is for you too. Any fan of Celtic music such as that of Enya or Loreena McKennitt will find this concert enjoyable. This is the DVD concert, but there is also a CD available as well.

Probably my favorite of all Loreena McKennitt’s music. This recording is particularly suitable for the Autumn and includes a number of tracks fitting to harvest time and Halloween. Superb!

The second sequel to The Mists of Avalon, this edition includes three shorter stories. The first picks up right where The Forest House (The Mists of Avalon: Prequel)left off with the founding of Avalon. It follows the tales of Caillean, the first Lady of Avalon, and Joseph of Arimathea and is an exciting read.

The middle story takes place two hundred years later and is the weakest of the three. It follows the tales of the Lady of Avalon and veers off into basically a pirates and ships tale with the underlying “lady and warrior from the drowned island reincarnated” theme that runs through all of the Avalon books.

The final story, about another two hundred years later, introduces Vivianne as a young girl and her training to become the Lady of the Lake. This tale is full of magic and is true to the Avalon mythos. It’s enthralling and worth the price of the book by itself.

Overall the book is good, but could do without the middle story which doesn’t seem to fit well with the other two and the Avalon cycle in general.

This is Loreena’s first full-length concert on DVD and does not disappoint. It’s one of the most spectacular and memorizing concerts you will watch. The concert is completely self-funded by Ms. McKennitt and her magical touch is not only found in the fusion of world and Celtic music she writes and performs, but also in every aspect of this concert that features the breathtaking background of the Alhambra and stunning soundtrack.

One of the most popular fantasy novels ever written is transformed into a brilliant miniseries starring Anjelica Huston and Julianna Margulies. While the story is slightly altered from the original novel to accommodate a TV audience, the magic that is Avalon and the goddess is still woven throughout the story. Although impossible to get ever detail of the 800+ novel into only four hours, the film did a good job of including the important points and by adding action and sword fights to the mix makes the film appealing to both men and women.

by Marrion Zimmer Bradley

This is the prequel to The Mists of Avalon and chronicles the life of a young Celtic priestess who meets and falls in love with a Roman soldier. It takes place approximately 400 years before The Mists of Avalonand includes a lot of foreshadowing of what is to come. It is strongly geared towards the Roman occupation of Britain just after Queen Boudicca’s failed revolution to drive out the Romans.

The story is true to the Avalon mythos with romance, magic and intrigue. It starts a bit slow and and is very heavy on the Roman occupation, but it picks up midway. It becomes a compelling story that leads us from the sacred grove of priestesses in The Forest House to the founding of what will become known as Avalon.

The ultimate fantasy novel that marries magic, mysticism, paganism, Christianity, Arthurian legend and history. Often billed as a telling of the tale of King Arthur from the point of view of the women that surrounded him, it is much more than that. The immense popularity and draw of this nearly 1000-page book laid the foundation for an entire cycle of Avalon related books, movies, music and contemporary pagan belief.

Set in 5th Century CE, it chronicles the lives of three sisters born of magic on the holy isle of Avalon: Morgouse (foster mother to Arthur’s son), Viviane (High Priestess of Avalon, Lady of the Lake and mother to Lancelot) and Igraine (mother of King Arthur and Morgaine le Fey). With Merlin emerging as a Druid priest, adviser and mentor to Arthur and father of the three sisters, the blood of Fairy and magic is revealed to run deep in Arthur’s line.

The magic and allure of Avalon is well weaved through this book that draws from historical fact, legend and hypothesis to form a superiorly crafted escape into a world where magic runs deep, loves run tragic and the fate of the world of men and world of mists lies in the balance. If you only ever read one fantasy novel in your life, this should be it.
